Board Certification

Board certification demonstrates a physician’s exceptional expertise in a specialty or subspecialty of medical practice. If a doctor has received board certification, it means that he or she is dedicated to providing exceptional patient care through a rigorous, voluntary commitment to lifelong learning.

An allergist/immunologist is a pediatrician or internist who has undergone two to three years of special training in the diagnosis and treatment of allergic and immunologic diseases. To become board certified in allergy and immunology, a physician must:

  • First become board certified in either internal medicine or pediatrics;
  • Complete his or her allergy and immunology fellowship training program; and
  • Pass the allergy and immunology boards, which are a combined board of internal medicine and pediatrics.
